Soilless technology could help the UK’s biomass industry grow. Achieving climate change targets requires rapid solutions. Our innovative soilless cultivation approach does just that.
Biomass? Afforestation? Multi-purpose crops? Taeda has the solution.
In order to meet our near-term climate change targets, we need to plant large amounts of trees and bioenergy crops. This takes time and could lead to negative impacts from land use change.
Our innovation grows short rotation coppice (SRC) cuttings, using only water and nutrients, at a higher yield on a smaller land footprint than traditional field growing. It is this potential that will serve to address the forecasted bottleneck of biomass supply in the UK as we strive towards net zero.
Independent of soil quality, our approach results in 25% faster growth and 100 % increase in above-ground biomass. Pre-empting potential climate change challenges of water scarcity and land usage, the closed-loop system requires limited amounts of water and fertilisers and limits any leaks of chemicals into the environment. It complements traditional practices of biomass production and offers a rapid solution to the fast deployment of biomass.
